Books of Resistance

At Grounds for Impeachment Coffee, we believe a good cup of coffee goes best with bold ideas. From the colonial coffeehouses of Philadelphia to today’s grassroots movements, coffee has always fueled debate, dissent, and democracy. That’s why we’re proud to feature books from authors who inspire action and remind us of coffee’s place in history — and in the struggle for a more just future.

Explore these works that, like our brews, are meant to wake you up and keep you engaged:

  • You Are Not Alone by Gary Lucks — A guide to turning political anxiety into effective action.

  • Coffee Nation by Michelle Craig McDonald — A sweeping history of how coffee shaped America’s early economy and its revolutionary spirit.

Grab a mug, open a book, and join the resistance — one sip, one page, one action at a time.

Coffee Nation

By Michelle Craig McDonald

We don’t just brew coffee — we honor the role it has played in shaping democracy and dissent. That’s why we’re thrilled to highlight Michelle Craig McDonald’s groundbreaking book, Coffee Nation: How One Commodity Transformed the Early United States.

We first connected with Michelle when G4IC was featured alongside her work at the University of Pennsylvania lecture Brewing a Revolution: Coffee in Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia. There, we explored how colonial coffeehouses became hotbeds of political debate and revolution—the original “grounds” for resistance.

In Coffee Nation, Michelle traces coffee’s journey from Caribbean plantations to Philadelphia coffeehouses, revealing how this seemingly ordinary drink fueled extraordinary change. Her research uncovers the economic and political forces that tied America’s fight for independence to global trade, enslavement, and the power of a daily cup.

Just as our mission is to fuel today’s resistance with bold brews, Coffee Nation shows how coffee was at the center of America’s earliest struggles for identity, power, and progress.

Raise a mug, read Michelle’s book, and remember: coffee has always been revolutionary.
